Summary


The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted unanimously to hike policy rates by 25 basis points (to 3.75-4.00%) to demonstrate its commitment to ensuring stable prices. A strengthening economy and low unemployment have allowed the Fed to focus on inflation, which has failed to make adequate progress and satisfy Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole standard. Committee forecasts and Warsh's remarks left the door open to further tightening to contain price pressures and sustain growth without committing to a future course of action.
